
Hongerig Aapje (Hungry Monkey)
This award winning 3D game was designed for children between the ages of 7 and 12 and is supposed to be played on a tablet. It is a puzzle game where the player navigates a maze on a 3D sphere.
The music and sound effects were made by me, entirely from scratch. For most of the sound effects, I went out to record audio which I then edited in Adobe Audition to fit the game. The music was created with MIDI in Reaper using various synths.
The music for the first level was made by analyzing different types of jungle-themed music. Much of the inspiration was drawn from games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Odyssey and the Legend of Zelda.
For the walking sound, I went out into my backyard and recorded the sound of me walking on woodchips. This, in turn, was made into the walking audio.
The music for the second level was made by analyzing different types of savannah-themed music. Much of the inspiration was drawn from games like Super Mario World, the Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy XIV.
For the walking sound, I went out and recorded the sound of me walking through gravel which I ended up turning into the audio you hear in the video.
The music for the third level was made by analyzing different types of arctic-themed music. Much of the inspiration was drawn from games like Super Mario 64, Sonic Advance and Underdale
For the walking sound, I could not record any sounds. At the time of making the audio, there was no snow outside and my attempts at recreating something similar had failed. Therefore I opted to create this synthetic sound with a digital synthesizer.
The eating sound was made by biting a big chunk out of an apple. This was then amplified and modified through various tools in Adobe Audition.
